Thomas N. Rushing
Tom has a B.A. in Music Theory and Composition and a B.M. in Music Education from William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. At Carey, he was a voice student of Donald Winters. He holds an M.A. in Music History from Tulane where he also completed additional graduate course work in music history and literature.
A former music teacher and school choir director at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, he has been active as a soloist and conductor of church choirs in Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Episcopal churches since 1964. His other professional experience includes performing with Tulane Summer Lyric Theatre and Tulane Opera Theatre, singing as baritone soloists with local and regional choral groups, church choirs, and orchestras, and appearing on stage with opera and theater companies in the Gulf Coast area.
Active in the musical life of St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church at various times since arriving in New Orleans in 1966, Tom has been Director of Music at the church since 2003.
